Cowen going to China for a week after budget

Seems as if Brian Cowen will not be hanging around long after the budget to be taking the flak. On Radio Kerry this morning the Irish Times Oireachtas correspondent, Michael O'Regan, stated that Brian Cowen will be going to China for a week from October 20-26. Quite what Cowen needs to be a whole week in China for escapes me.

On the flip side we will have 'Mary from Dungloe' running the country for a whole week!

Cowen/Lenihan refused to discuss the economy this week, on the basis that the Budget is in 3 weeks.

Now, they have a reason not to discuss it the week AFTER the budget either.

The Chinese could learn a thing or two from Cowen about how to stifle democracy

Hopefully he'll be able to get some business for Irish companies and some investment from Chinese companies. If it'll help to mitigate the mess he helped to create then it will be worthwhile.

It's RTE's new autumn schedule reality show: "'I'm in charge of the Country - get me out of here!"

Are you living in some alternate reality?

China is even more banjaxed than we are. One of the French Banks this week advised its clients to get out of China PDQ because it is about to blow.

And I'd love to know how Biffo is personally responsible for the credit recycling pyramid scheme that the global banking system has been using for the last 10 years.

This was feted by everybody (except McWilliams) as a brilliant new innovation that would bring never ending "growth" and prosperity.

Fine Gael bought it, Fianna Fail bought it, Labour bought it, even Sinn Fein seemed to buy it in the run up to the election. (The PDs believed it - and look where they are now: the same place as Freres Lehman )

What I find most ironic is the fact that there are still people who believe that the Emperor has Clothes - hence the $700Billion bailout scam that Paulson is trying to foist on the PDYs.
"Always do right. This will gratify some people and astonish the rest." Mark Twain

“When a government is dependent upon bankers for money, they and not the leaders of the government control the situation, since the hand that gives is above the hand that takes. Money has no motherland; financiers are without patriotism and without decency; their sole object is gain.” Napoléon Bonaparte

Maybe he has seen the economy projections for 2009 and has lined up a job interview.

Enjoy the trip Brian. I hear the milk is much better than here. And the White Rabbit candy is really good.

Bollox. The Chinese make products that people buy. That's the difference between their economy and ours. A country that has a strong manufacturing base, as China now does, is in a much better position than a country where the construction sector once accounted for over a fifth of GDP.

Cowen does bear some responsibility for the mess we're in. He was Minister for Finance and could have taken action to reduce our dependence on construction sector and the major decline in competitiveness.
