    Offaly - Local Elections 2009

Fianna Fail Headquarters have confirmed that the following candidates have been nominated from the Edenderry (North Offaly) L.E.A. to contest the upcoming County Council selection convention.

    (1) Noel Bourke - Edenderry Town - Sitting County Councillor - Recently retired head of H.R. at Bord na Mona.

    (2) Ger Killally - Edenderry Rural - Sitting County Councillor, General Election candidate '97 + '02 - Auctioneer/Developer/Businessman.

    (3) John Foley - Edenderry Town - Sitting Town Councillor, General Election candidate '07 - Businessman.

    (4) Noel Cribben - Edenderry Town - Sitting Town Councillor - Postman.

    (5) Stephen Mather - Bracknagh (between Portarlington and Edenderry) - Secretary Offaly C.D.C., Community Activist - Retail Manager.

    (6) Tom Nolan - Garryhinch (near Portarlington) - Former County Councillor, Chairman Edenderry C.C. - Car Dealer.

Any ideas on how this one will pan out, or who would fair well in the Local Election setup?

I think I''ll just have to accept the fact that no-one from Co. Offaly uses this website!!!

    Phoenix,

From electionsIreland I saw that SF only ran two candidates in tullamore ward in 2004.
Seamus Walsh & Oliver o'Connor who got about 400 in total or 3.5% (1/4 of a quota) and nobody else in the other 3 wards. In the GE in 2007 Brian Stanley got 3656 votes the most of which might be expected to have come from Laoighis.

Things can change in 4 years and I am unfamiliar with local politics there but it would seem as if the next election would be about building a vote base rather than genuine aspirations for a seat. That said maybe someone who is familiar with the local dynamic might be able to add some light

Irish Independent announces that sitting FF Councillor Ger Killally will not contest the local election next June. The piece also say he is resigning as the party's chief whip (on existing council).

This development will improve Fergus McDonell's (elected in 04 for PD's) chance of holding his seat this time as an Independent.

Why not wait for the vote? That'll end any speculation and wasting evryone time posting predictions and crystal ball gazing.

Or just clear the way for John Foley? Would Fergus not find it a bit of a tight squeeze in Edenderry town with two high profile vote getters like Bourke and Foley on his doorstep. Fergus was Fianna Fail at one stage and got a large transfer from Bourke last time out.

Word is that there is a good chance that Mather will be on the ticket. He lives over near your neck of the woods, do you know him and what do you make of him?

Also, the thinking is that of the 6 seats, Fianna Fail should take 3. Who do you think will loose out?

Biffo's tax-avoidance brother should run on the basis of he does not listen to the brother, did not take his financial advice and is an independent thinker, would run away with it on being the smartest "cute hoor" in the race.
