we all know what happened,it seems very rarely talked about in FF. your views?
"Yeah, well, there's a mirror in the toilet if you want to go in there and talk to them." - Brian Cowen responding to Martin McG - "We'll have to consult the army council on this"

I would say that a lot of the younger Fianna Failers (just like a lot of the younger Greens, Fine Gaelers, etc.) would not even know what the 1981 Hunger strike was about.

Fianna fail would have seen the hunger strikes as a threat in 1981 especially in border areas but I dont believe that they would give the hunger strikes political relevance today.

So it would be remembered by the older FF people as just an electoral threat to Haughey's putative overall majority, you think?

Would they not have seen it as a potential threat to public order as well?

I would respect those that died for political legitimacy. I have spoken of them in recent times at FF meetings. Not a great reaction I will confess. I was a wee bairn at the time but I would hope Charlie and the FF government did make efforts to broker a deal. The five demands purely sought political acceptance.

their personal sacrifice and heroism being beyond dispute, the fact that they lead to the armelite and ballot box strategy was in everyone's interest in the long run, but because of stardust timing cost mr H. His opportunity for financial prudence that he spoke about in jan 80.
We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns — the ones we don't know we don't know.

Do you think all members of the ra were heroes or just ones who's death can be romanticised?
We should be shaping an Ireland based on full respect for the human and civil rights of all our people, an Ireland of which Larkin and Connolly would be very proud.
