He'll get in line behind Mary Coughlan, Mary Hanafin, and my man Michael first.Originally Posted by Darren Mac an Phríora

Hanafin just got demoted
The word 'politics' is derived from the word 'poly', meaning 'many', and the word 'ticks', meaning 'blood sucking parasites
Congratulations to him lenihan.![]()
It wont be too long when you're right or wrong!

There will be another reshuffle in a year and a half. She'll get bumped up then.

Lenihan will be the next leader of Fianna Fail. That has been clearly established today. The only reason he did not get the position of Tanaiste is that it would have served to raise his profile dangerously high (for Cowen); Finanace is sufficient. Giving the honour to Coughlan is harmless, in that she presents no leadership threat at any time in the future, no matter what pressures Cowen's leadership may come under.Originally Posted by Darren Mac an Phríora

I don't know if lawyers make good Finance ministers.

he's odds on favourite IMO, not because I think he has the qualities we should look for in a taoiseach, but because he's the front runner in a powerful political dynasty, and in FF, that counts for a huge amount.Originally Posted by Darren Mac an Phríora
The one thing that could prevent him from succeeding Cowen might be the fact that Finance for the next few years could be a poisoned chalice as we sink into debt and government cutbacks become a major factor of the next few budgets. He might even become taoiseach even before the next election if Cowen does very badly in the local elections and loses the Lisbon treaty. (as a long shot)
Actual morality is doing what is right regardless of what you're told. Religious morality is doing what you're told, regardless of if it's right.

Good. She was a pathetic Minister For Education, who lost the support of members of her own party. However, I wish her well in her new brief
I would have preferred Dempsey, who would have provided a bit of spark. Lenihan, for all his abilities, will have an eye on his career.
