His chance for top job has gone barring some unseen catastrophe befalling Cowen.

If FF win the next election - Cowen will stay on.
If FF lose it - Bruton will be taoiseach and Lenihan, Cowen, Dempsey, etc will be pushed aside by next generation of FF who are already getting impatient with life on the backbenches.

We are talking about the future after Brian Cowen is gone.

Maybe if certain people hadn't been trying to subvert our democracy, it could have been avoided, eh Brian?

It does not matter who FF appoint to finance -they wont upset Developers. God forbid they might build services with houses or pay Stamp duty. They need the money obviously. Once he has kept his paymasters happy (builders) Im sure he can be leader some day. I used to have no problem with FF being the builders party but in the last 8 years they let them build anywhere and I mean anywhere.

They could have slowed the housing boom any number of ways but chose to ignore economic reality that a bust always follows a housing boom. 100% mortages ? No stamp duty for developers.Throwing money into an overheated economy in 2002.

Whether he will be leader or not is premature on the day Cowen is elected. We need more money for Education and Health. Taxes must rise- would be interesting to see if he has the balls for that !

Hanafin is gone - demotion this time, mid term reshuffle will see her drop to junior ranks and then gone. Lenihan is well positioned as a result of this but to be honest I think Cowen is long term grooming Coughlan for the job. Cowen will be there for at least another election - probably 2. Coughlan is young (born 1965) and will (if she does well) get a run in FA and in Finance. She will then become the first female Taoiseach.

Well - it's not impossible !! long way to go and a lot to go potentially wrong for her in the meantime

What has Coughlan ever done that has elevated her to Tanaiste?? Apart from swearing at a farmer??

He'll get in line behind Mary Coughlan, Mary Hanafin, and my man Michael first.
