Cowen elected as Uachtarán Fhianna Fáil

Brian Cowen has been unanimously elected as Uachtarán Fhianna Fáil at a special meeting of the Fianna Fáil Ard Chomhairle.

Mr Cowen's nomination was proposed by Dermot Ahern, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Vice President of Fianna Fáil, and was seconded by Noel Dempsey, Minister for Transport and Hon Treasurer of Fianna Fáil.

Mr Cowen is the seventh President of Fianna Fáil and his appointment takes effect immediately.

In accepting the nomination, Mr Cowen told a packed National Executive meeting that becoming leader and Uachtarán of Fianna Fáil was the greatest honour of his political career to date.

Tomorrow afternoon he will become Taoiseach replacing Bertie Ahern who formerly tendered his resignation to President Mary McAleese today.

Minister for Tourism, Arts and Sport Séamus Brennan will not be a member of Mr Cowen's Cabinet.

Mr Brennan wrote to the incoming Taoiseach saying he would not be putting his name forward for consideration because of his recent health problems.

Mr Brennan praised Mr Cowen and said he would be available for a future role at his discretion in either domestic or European politics.

    What a load of cr*p.

As if Cowen will change anything. FF will still be rotten to the core. There is not the slightest sign Cowen will be any differnt to CJH, Reynolds and Ahern.

I'm open minded on Reynolds in that he seems to have tried to deal with FF corruption - and it's not clear if he didn't try hard enough or wasn't there long enough to get much changed. I suspect the former.

Yet another politician too scared to start the conversation with the public to educate them to link the state of public services in Ireland and the rot at the heart of FF which Cowen will do nothing to change.

Still sucking up to FF? Looking for some cushy ministerial jobs? Well, maybe next time round. Its likely that Cowen will be so desperate by then he'll even take you lot on - if you manage to get any seats at all next time round.

Of course, Cowen is nearly as guilty as Ahern for squandering ten years of unprecedented global boom and using that boom to turn tens of thousands of young people into rent-slaves and mortgage-slaves in a country 4% urbanised. He helped the Landlord class to stash 1.2 trillion of their ill-gotten gains abroad. He oversaw Irish industry starved of capital and made sure it was far more profitable to move it abroad and into land deals in Ireland than into Irish industry. He conspired in our almost total, junky like, dependance on foreign multi-nationals ( all leaving now - like the Landlord loot). Need I go on? In any normal country such officials would be put on trial for treason.
