    Political Appointments Under Cowen

From a discussion on the BBC Website:

In Nigeria, political appointments are usually, a means of rewarding friends and party members for their loyalty in ensuring success at the polls. This is basically a reason for the inefficiency in government. I wish things could change. But it appears Yaradua will not be any different from his political godfather.

Does anybody believe that important political appointments to State Bodies will be based on loyalty to FF instead of competence to the same extent under Cowen as they were under Bertie?

    of course

Of course! Why would political parties change the manner in which they reward party functionaries and friends/relations through state appointments now? They have been at it longer than Nigeria, I'll wager.

I'm afraid Mr. Bertie Ahern disagrees with you on that one, Derry.

"I might have appointed somebody but I appointed them because they were friends"

    B. Ahern.

Let's appoint Bertie as chair of the Irish-Nigerian Economic Relations Council. He could be based in Lagos.

It's not just the opposition parties, and Bertie himself, who'd disagree with that. There's the second-largest party in Government...
