Fingal Pay out 5.47 Million Euros to Squatting Travellers

    IT reports

"FINGAL COUNTY Council has paid more than €5 million to seven Traveller families, and continues negotiating with two other groups, to move off lands at Dunsink Lane, which the council will now buy from its original owners.

The council has been attempting to purchase the land, an approximately 40-acre site to the west of Finglas, for more than 10 years but has been blocked by Travellers who claimed "possessory title", also known as "squatters' rights", to the land"

The council is still in negotiations with two remaining groups who claim possessory title over a "small portion of the lands" in question, the council said.

RTE's superstar Pat Kenny is claiming squatters rights over a piece of property adjoining his home. The owner of the property has taken him to court and the case has yet to be decided.

If claiming squatters rights is ok for the best paid broadcaster in the country, then I, for one, ain't going to condemn some considerably less well off travellers for pursuing a similar claim.

Maybe because a senior member, like the minks mentioned above, was known to have squatted at a number of properties on Dublins Northside (one nice red brick on the Drumcondra Rd and another out the back of All Hallows) that he did not own during the 90's. Apparently he also received large volumes of cash as a result.

No. This is utterly disgraceful and worthy of a C&AG / CAB / Tribunal investigation surely?

If the laws of the land need to be changed to avoid this carry-on then change them now.

Are ordinary mortals who work, contribute to the economy and pay their income taxes, VAT etc expected to respect the culture of disgusting leeches like these?

Thats right Cookie68 and if you fail in making them returns you get fined, disgraced ,shown up in public .The problem with Ireland is we have a load of do gooder PCers that are holding this country to ransom .Does the Taxpayer in this country have a voice I don't think so.
A champion of the people emerges with the age-old and appealing promise of "something for nothing" - to be financed through every-increasing taxes. Supply and demand are thrown out of gear - the overhead goes up; the effective use of human energy goes down; the standard of living is lowered because money cannot buy wealth that is not produced.

It is the Council that is at fault for allowing someone to trespass with exclusive posession for twelve years

Have had the same carry on in Sligo for years. Travelers usurped a car park and the council conceded and actually piped them to the water and electric mains. A similar monetary incentive will be required to shift them if at all.

    It is a disgrace.

    It is a disgrace.
Its extortion. Nothing more, nothing less.
    And its ripping us off.

They should be asked nicely to move.
    Then they should be removed.
