FF Lisbon campaign: Only starting now ??

I was interested to read a comment by a prominent* Ogra Fianna Fáiler earlier, which worried me. In an attempt to divert the discussion on the McAleese/tax cheats thread, he said:

Is this true? Are Fianna Fáil only now starting their campaign for Lisbon? Dermot Ahern and Brian Cowen were appointed to run the campaign on February 8th. Has it taken a full month for anything to get moving?

"Dunny" made the above statement in a boastful manner, as if it was something to be proud of that the FF campaign starts next Monday. But contrast this with what FG have been up to in the meantime.

1) Gay Mitchell and Steering Committee appointed on January 10th (a full month before FF had even thought about it)
2) FG are already doing a national canvass and dropping a card with a message from Enda on it in relation to Lisbon
3) Lucinda Creighton has spoken at several public meetings across the country including two in Dublin, one of which sent the owners of this website into a complete frenzy of anger
4) Gay Mitchell has been doing street canvasses in Dublin recently handing out booklets on Lisbon
5) Enda himself has spoken at several public meetings

Even Labour (not exactly a radical or well-organised outfit) have been holding public meetings, as evidenced by the number of posters they have up around Dublin city centre.

What on earth is the hold-up with FF ? Is this going to be a re-run of the 2001 debacle, when they barely lifted a finger?

*In his own head, at least

Im talking about the series of meetings organised by Fianna Fail explicity in relation to the Referendum

Unless you are blind and deaf, you would have seen the many speeches given by FF reps at various events in support of the treaty.

I also find it funny that people are talking about a campaign starting when we dont know exactly when the Referendum is taking place!!!

Another nonsense argument from you. Your own Ministers have been saying for months that late May early June was the likely date. This was confirmed, again, as recently as yesterday by Dermot Ahern.

Are you saying that the FF policy was to wait-and-see when the Referendum would be held before thinking about a campaign?

Ummmm aren't FF the people who decide when it will be held?

Actually its the government of ireland who make that decision. Its a cabinet decision.

Im merely pointing out that if the Referendum is not until late may/ early june, we run the risk of pissing off the electorate with a 3 month campaign.

The biggest and most persistant problem that voters have is the lack of information on the Treaty. And you say we should have a short campaign, giving us less of a chance to inform people?

Did i say we should have a short campaign?

I said 3 months would be two long. Do you really think 8 weeks is too short or even 6?

The information will be made available to the Irish people via a host of different political parties and interest groups.
