Any chance of Charlie McCreevy returning to Irish politics?

I know he was quoted last year as saying he wouldn't return to Irish politics but is there any chance McCreevy will return to Fianna Fail when his commissionership ends?

What is the general impression of this man? Mine was fairly positive - he seems smart and hasn't any acccusations of venality. Also he seems to have done a competent in Europe. He's fairly young (59?) I think his term ends in 2009 so he may be too late to get home for Bertie's job.

Was he generally disliked in Fianna Fail by the time he left? Was he seen as too right wing and PD-aligned?

bad points : decentralisation, funny way of talking (never hurt bertie)
squirms more than cowen, unknown to very young voters.

Not a hope in hell of him returning to Irish Politics. Well not as a FF representative anyway.

There was a whole portion of FF who liked and supported Charlie, once Bertie shifted him off they got the ************************ty end of Bertie's stick.

He won't come back. The PDs are finished. Why would he? (Sorry, just realised this is an FF thread) I just don't associate a man who pushed through 7 doctrinaire PD budgets with FF.

I'd like him to. McCreevy as Taoiseach would be wonderful for the country and he would be a great asset to us as leader. He was much better as Finance Minister than Brian Cowen and would make a better Taoiseach. Whether that'll happen is highly uncertain, but it would be welcome. He's an FFer I can vote for.

I suppose if the country goes into recession he could be easily marketed as the "genius who led us to prosperity" and makes a triumhpal return as leader of FF after Berties succesor.

That's a definite possibility and would be a shrewd move by Fianna Fáil. It would make them more amenable to a non-aligned like myself.

He was the main architect of the decentralisation debacle. One of most ill thought out unworkable and arrogant policies for a long time. Wouldnt want to see him back.

McCreevy has a lot to offer us yet, he would have the ability to get support from non FF voters

erm...the same people were in charge when the recession started as when the boom did....that would be a very strange way of thinking.
