A political cancer is eating its way through the Progressive Democrats. As the self styled moral conscience of the nation, the PDs have never disabused the ubiquitous analysis that they are Fianna Fáil’s watchdog in Government. Now they have lost not only their bite, but the PD bark has gone hoarse as well. Mary Harney has seemed a refreshingly frank politician, never afraid to speak her mind.This has both disguised, and has been the cause of, some stunning errors of political judgement in recent years. Nobody will forget her outburst about single mothers in the 1997 election campaign. The question is, what role does she have on the modern Irish political landscape? She was the original politician in the white suit.
