Govt to propose Dáil motion to condemn tribunal leaks

    http://breakingnews.ie/ireland/mheyojauojid/

The Government is expected to ask the Dáil to back a demand for an end to leaks about the work of the Mahon Tribunal.

The move is designed to defuse a Fine Gael motion calling for the Dáil to reaffirm its confidence in the tribunal.

The FG motion follows criticism of the tribunal by the Taoiseach and a succession of ministers over its questioning of Mr Ahern.

It wants the Dáil to reaffirm its confidence in the tribunal and also its belief that the tribunal is acting without bias and within its remit.

The Government will propose an amended motion also supporting the tribunal but rather than backing the tribunal on how it has been doing its work may choose the use the motion to condemn leaks arising from Tribunal documents.

The Government is not expected to finalise the wording until just before the Dáil resumes at the end of the month.

Why are the government doing this?

There is nothing wrong with the FG motion, yet the government wants to be critical of the Tribunal, and by not saying that you have confidence in the Tribunal workings, how can you say you have confidence in the Tribunal. It is an affront to democracy, and the government are trying to undermine the tribunal by doing this.

That's a bit risky - considering where the "leaks" actually came from.

Completely agree, I can't see how the greens could support a motion where explicit confidence in the tribunal is not clearly and unambiguously stated.

Is it FF who are responsible for the leaks?

They would know whats coming up and the drip drip of information seems to be watering down the full story and makes Bertie look like a victim. Which of course FF are milking.
