There are people who haven't passed the exams who currently do this role including some who are the Finance Director.

QBE (Qualified by Experience) is something which used to be reasonably prevalent in advertisements as companies wanted someone who could do the work but they didn't have to pay the full going rate for a qualified Accounatnt. In addition a QBE is less likely to move jobs every couple of years.
Yes QBE used to be prevalent but has long since gone out of fashion and saying being an accounts clerk meant you were QBE is about as far off as saying I have no tax issues but paying them 70k in cash to cover them..
QBE is still there but mainly in smaller medium sized organisations who are unlikely to grow massively in the short term i.e. the plodding firms that generate a resonable return but will never be the next microsoft.

I wouldn't devalue the QBE because some of the people I have worked with have been way better than the qualifieds simply because they are longer in the org and can do things that qualifieds have no idea about.

Its also worth remembering that the major Accountancy bodies have drastically changed the way they do exams. Previously it was a requirement to pass every paper every sitting in many cases this no longer exists.

Coming across QBE's who got hit with that rule while trying to manage a family with 2 young kids plus a job with no study support and struggling to pay a mortgage 20 years ago somehow stops the comparison V the daddy funded Uni grad who will stay for 3 years to get it on his CV.
I love the way Odie always manages to avoid discussing the topic at all costs... This thread was about Bertie embarrassing Ireland abroad, and Odie manages to deflect the conversation away to "QBE"s. Well done Odie. If you look at all of his/her posts they all do the same thing. FF to the core...
Nope i'm taking issue with the point regarding SBP calling him a qualified accountant.

As for Bertie embarassing Ireland abroad well trust me nobody cares as they are too mired in their own issues.

Can i put this to bed once and for all by agreeing with this statement.

He was a Clerical Officer in the Finance Dept of the Mater Hospital many years. I am happy to post this here as i was told this by a man who worked by his side for some of those years. This man is currently General Manager of a prominent Dublin Hospital.
    Pandora's box?
Maybe so. I'm not really worried.

I know what i know and it is the honest truth. Prove me wrong.

I would imagine that other EU leaders will care if Bertie's name is mentioned for EU President??

Either way I just felt I should point out your usual tactics...

He was an accountant...just not a chartered accountant.
Admittedly, the ambiguity is typical of the man. He couldn't just be a chartered accountant with all the necessary experience and qualifications...it has to be some weird pseudo accountancy type thing with question marks over it.

Up until the last couple of years it was not possible to be a Chartered Accountant unless you had worked for a Chartered Accountancy practice and followed through their exams.

    Eh, believe me I know!

And that's rubbish Galeforce...an accountant is someone who works with accounts. A chartered accountant is a member of one of the professional bodies who has obtained the relevant qualifications.
Calling himself an accountant is not inaccurate...it's perhaps a little vague but it's certainly not a lie or even a white lie.
