Is it time for FF to ditch the "The Republican Party" tagline?

Now that SF have called for a referendum on a united Ireland how can FF credibly define itself as "the republican party"? Would it be better as part of the rebuilding/rebranding process to position itself away from republicanism and distance itself from SF? It would be very difficult for FF to continue to do so given the fact that SF has taken over this "role" as it were.
Or if it did this would it force many of it's remaining "core" to migrate support to SF?

It seems to me that it's very much a case of the old guard of republicanism being replaced by the new and IF FF are ever recover they will need to find something else to identify itself with.

People can call themselves Republican if they like - from Left, Right and Center. I'm a SF voter and I don't think Adams and Co have any monopoly on Republicanism - thank God.

The Civil War parties all have tags that link themselves to the past. This is one of FF. It's as meaningless as FG saying thay are Micks party or SF trying be link themselves to SF movement after 1916 like they have been doing for the last year or so.

FF will recover because FG/Lab/SF dont know how to kill them off. Christsake they have mehole for leader and are still a major party in ireland. thats not good leadership on Martin's part, it is bad leadership on everyone elses part.

I doubt even FG would have them.

They were only " republican " insofar as they were part of de Valeras spat with Collins. Their instincts were militaristic and they always had a contempt for democracy , even internally, as the Northern Brigades of the IRA were pro-Treaty. They took their mandate from an illegal meeting of the Daíl where only 200 out of 600 representatives turned up and nothing we have today like unarmed police, civil administration or judiciary can be accredited to FF.

It might be more appropriate to ditch the discredited Fianna Fail name - what is a 'soldier of destiny' anyway?
