    Constructive Opposition - New legislation

This is what opposition parties should do regularly. The point of being elected into a national legislator is to propose legislation and to try highlight issues of national importance. In light of the alarming rise in this type of crime over the past year I for one am happy to see this being put before the house.

I'm well aware that the usual suspects will be on this with a copy and paste job of the usual drivel they post on every thread that has Fianna Fáil in the subject however, I'd like to hear from people on what they think of the proposal itself. Do minimum sentences work? Is 10 years too much/too little?

Why not try it yourself. See you in 10 years.

The most constructive thing Fianna Fail could do is disband
loner, fionnmccool, McDave and 4 others like this.
Breathing new life into Fianna Fáil is like breathing new life into the Black and Tans.

If FF found the cure for lung cancer, half the posters here would decry them for not having done so in 14 years of government and the other half would suggest that they got a brown envelope from cigarette companies.

Minimum sentences are stupid, they discourage guilty pleas (eg drink driving) or give an incentive not to leave any witnesses behind them.

Ten years wouldn't be way off IMO. It's a very nasty crime.

However, before they go fiddling with sentencing terms, I'd rather see our Oireachtas come up with a way to ensure given sentences are served. If that means more prisons, then let's build them.

I think it's fair enough, if the full ten are served.

I wonder how many current and past FF TDs qualify for the 10 year sentence? I just cannot bring myself around to taking seriously any proposals put forward by Bertie the Bookie's runners.

Sinn Féin have already been proposing legislation. About bloody time Fianna Fáil did it.

As for constructive opposition-yeah right. Fianna Fáil oppose policies that they themselves created.

Irish politics doesn't work like that because of party whip.TD's can't vote for the other tribe's bill. Labour done this years ago when they proposed a civil unions bill that was actually superior to the legislation we have now, but FF voted it down.
