Willie O’Dea, John McGuinness & others made representations for lawyers.

According to today's Irish Times FIANNA FÁIL TDs Willie O’Dea and John McGuinness were among the politicians who wrote letters for lawyers who were hoping to be appointed to the judiciary,

O'Dea among politicians who spoke for lawyers later made judges - The Irish Times - Thu, Dec 29, 2011

According to the article Willie O’Dea, then a minister of state at the Department of Justice, wrote in 2004 on behalf of Eamon O’Brien. Judge Eamon O’Brien is a moveable judge of the District Court.

Mr McGuinness wrote to on behalf of Gerard Furlong. Judge Gerard Furlong is also a moveable judge of the District Court."

Michael Noonan, then in opposition also wrote a letter but the person he recommended was unsuccessful.

Surely the time has now come when this practice of politicians writing letters on behalf of those hoping to be appointed judges should be stopped.

According to the article Willie O’Dea, then a minister of state at the Department of Justice, wrote to Mr McDowell in 2004 on behalf of Eamon O’Brien. Judge Eamon O’Brien is a moveable judge of the District Court.

Mr McGuinness, now chairman of the Committee of Public Accounts, wrote to John O’Donoghue in 1998 on behalf of Gerard Furlong. Judge Gerard Furlong is also a moveable judge of the District Court."

Couldn't agree more. The present government should declare an end to all such representations.

The 'Present Government' is more likely to make further representations of it's own... This is Ireland FFSake...

Completely agree as well. It shouldn't be simply a case of who you know.

Judges are a branch of government. They are politicians. I think it's naive to try to separate politics from the judiciary. More important is to make judicial appointments as transparent as possible.

People like Willie O'Dea should NEVER be a public representative..
He is a perjurer among other things and is a disgrace to the political & legal professionals.
Other that the damn civil war politics, I cannot imagine how anyone with a conscience could be responsible for electing him to power. I AM EMBARRASSED TO SEE THAT HE IS STILL HANGING IN THERE. Is there no way to get rid of these disgraced people.

Michael (turnover) O Kennedy made reps for a man and said he was not as old as he looked. Is there any end to it ?

Well, Micheál Martin seems to think that Willie O'Dea is exactly what the Fianna Fail front bench needs
