Micheal Martin gets 4 mins on RTE tonight to reply to Enda's address

He3 wrote on Saturday of how the Gov was getting the airtime under emergency provisions of the broadcasting act. But it appears the act wasn't invoked. The government simply asked RTE on Friday for the airtime, which RTE obliged.

As a result, Micheal Martin, as FF leader, gets four minutes after this evening's (Monday's) 9pm news on RTE One.

He has to record it tomorrow morning, but the timing seems extraordinary, and it seems odd that the Gov wouldn't use the act.

The Technical Group and Sinn Fein also get airtime, Thomas Pringle and Gerry Adams will be recording responses too, which will be broadcast around the Six One news this evening.

What do you think Martin should do with the airtime?

I wonder was it an oversight? Perhaps so they can't be accused of excluding anyone. Seems remarkable though.

And, given he has no control over anything, what do you think Micky Martin's is going to be?

If you're FG/LAB and about to make cuts who would you want on prime time TV arguing against you . . . .only a member of the previous disgraced cabinet of course!

I have no idea what he'll choose to talk about, but I would hope he would concentrate on the Euro crisis.

This could go on a while. Can we let Malbekh start a thread on this Monday?

They cannot give Mickey Martin a broadcast with only 24 hours notice! Don't they know how indecisive he famously is? How do they expect him to make up his mind what to say at such short notice? He needs at least a fortnight - time to commission a report to recommend what to do (and then true to form to entirely ignore the recommendation and look for a second report!).
