A 5th preference can still be valuable under PR-STV, depending on what happens to the 4 candidates higher in the order of preference e.g. if they were all eliminated before Power, then the vote would eventually transfer to him.
Also, under the rather complicated rules for distribution of surpluses, it might help Power even if one of the higher preferences gets elected.
    It's all fairly improbable, though.
centric and Alan Alda like this.

I'm familiar with the system, but thanks anyway,
    I'm sure you meant well.

    Cheers.

    Apologies.
Your low number of posts desensitised my irony detector.

Hopefully none of them will run.

Every one of them should be deported to Somalia for a refresher course in reality.

Yes Willie was judged on being a good funeral goer and helped people out with medical cards.

With the one member-one vote procedure expected to be passed at the Ard Fheis in February, many former TD's might not even get selected were they to try and get the nomination again.
Obviously, a good majority of Senators will be running in their respective constituencies. I would expect to see TD's such as those first elected in 2007 to seek a nomination again such as Margaret Conlon and Seán Connick. Mary Hanafin will also ensure that her name is on the ballot once more in Dun Laoighaire but following the Crisis in the Cowen Government documentary, a lot of members are looking at her unfavourably. Other names such as Maire Hoctor, Barry Andrews, Peter Power and Chris Andrews are all ones to keep an eye on.

However, I would expect and hope that in a great majority of constituencies, any new candidates successfully elected in 2014 local elections will be nominated.

Time moves on and I think if any of the former TD's/Senators who lost their seat and intend on running in 2016 they should be made run for the locals in 2014. If FF are on the way back some of them should receive big votes and might be able to bring in a running mate and also if some of the "big" names are poisonous better to find out in the locals than at the general election.

Looking at Dun Laoghaire, there is only 1 FF councillor at the moment so a vacancy for a big name remains in Blackrock and Ballybrack Wards. Dublin needs to targeted especially.

Best thing I heard today. But all he's doing is seeking the nomination, if Steve Silvermint has any sense (a rhetorical flourish!) he'll tell the Bull to go back to drinking his pension.
