Euro 2009....Who will run with Eoin Ryan in Dublin?

hi all....have been considering this over the last few days and cannot think of any runners to join ryan on the ticket. Unlike previous times no-one is actively pushing for the nomination.........am I missing something or will royston make a comeback? or will the Mary Lou factor make a woman the only choice?

It will be a 3 seater so why run anyone else?
Dan Sullivan. I was back but we still couldn't all have a vote.

Probably still early days and many potential candidates were probably waiting to see if they'd get a seat in the Dail first!

Worth noting that this will probably be a three-seat constituency next time out, so doubt Ryan will want a strong running mate, especially if the voters are likely to use the opportunity for a good old styled mid-term anti-government backlash

John O'Leary would be a good candidate and provide a northside / southside balance.

Dunno CorkHurler... If O'Leary was in FF for the long haul, I suspect he should be aiming at getting FF a seat back in Balbriggan rather than just hoovering up a few extra transfers to get Eoin Ryan over the line...
From another side of things, he does have the advantage of being a recognisable, Northside, candidate

    European Parliament 2009

I can think of a number of options here. Firstly, the Dublin ticket has to have a good geographic spread, ie one from the north side of the city and one from the southside of the city.

Ryan is from the South, therefore his running mate has to be from the North side. I think FF will opt for a higher profile candidate than the mistake of the last time, when Royston Brady ran.

I think the list of candidates to emerge from the northside will include Ivor Callelly, who lost his seat on May 24 in Dublin North Central, and Martin Brady, who lost his seat in Dublin North East.

Michael Woods may also be tempted. He is very popular in the Northside, and would give the FF ticket an ideal youth/experience ticket.

Staying in Europe, it will be interesting to see who will run in Munster with Brian Crowley. I doubt it if Gerry Collins will run again, FF need a high-profile candidate with Crowley. John O'Donoghue or Martin Cullen could be possibilities here.

In Connacht-Ulster, Sean O'Neachtain will be a front runner for an FF nomination, while he could be joined by someone like Cecilia Keaveney in the Northern half of the constituency. She would have appeal, and would take votes away from Mary Harkin.

In Leinster, Liam Aylward will be FF's main flagbearer again, while Donie Cassidy would be an ideal running mate.

Those are just some possibilities for FF.

Looking at FG's list of candidates, I don't think Colm Burke is a strong candidate in Munster. He will be joined by a high profile candidate. Jimmy Deenihan would be ideal. He got a great vote in Kerry North and would be well-known across Munster. He would have a better chance of retaining FG's seat.

In Dublin, Gay Mitchell will run again, while in Connacht-Ulster, Jim Higgins could be joined by someone like Dinny McGinley or Seymour Crawford. In Leinster, Avril Doyle and Mairead McGuinness will be at each other's throats again.

For Labour, Pronsias De Rossa will be the standard-bearer in Dublin, though Pat Rabbitte could go if he loses the leadership. Brendan Howlin would be a high profile candidate in Leinster, while former leader Dick Spring's name will be mentioned in Munster. Over in Connacht-Ulster, Michael D Higgins will have to be the front-runner.

Munster will be interesting. I think Crowley will be returned again, Jimmy Deenihan, if he stands, could take the FG seat, while FF and Cathy Sinnott will battle out for the last seat.

In Leinster, I expect FF to hold their seat through Liam Aylward, Avril Doyle will be certain to return for FG, while the last seat could be a dogfight between Brendan Howlin, Donie Cassidy and Mairead McGuinness.

Over in Connacht-Ulster, I think FF will hold their seat, Jim Higgins should be safe for FG, while the last seat will be a dogfight between the second FF candidate and Marian Harkin with Michael D if he goes, as a dark horse

She'll keep her powder (and finances) dry for DNC or its successor constituency next time out.
