Should Fianna Fáil be allowed to divorce Bertie Ahern?
The dogs in the street know that Fianna Fáil must put clear blue water between its future and the Fianna Fáil that that governed Ireland between 1997 & 2011.
A key plank in this strategy will be focusing blame on suitable scapegoats, and as scapegoats go there is none better than Bertie Ahern.
The mudslinging cannot really start start yet with Michael Martin and the members of the old Cabal in situ as a lot would stick to others. But this can and will change as Mr. Martin hastened his demise with his handleing of the Presidential election. Fianna Fáil will be quiet as mice during the forth comming campaign.
It would be all to easy to allow them to shred Mr Ahern, and his reputation is liquidated by his own, and to allow the fact that Fianna Fáil effort was a collective effort involving every member and supporter. Part of the Fianna Fail delusion is that they did the best that could be done at every stage in the State's history. That article of faith too will have to be confronted, and Fianna Fáil will have to acknowledge they gave us a civil war, an economic war, that they opposed progress in Northern Ireland, and that they caused the destruction of the economy on an unprecedented scale.
The Mahon Tribunal's report will do even more damage to Fianna Fáil than it will to bertie, because the big question will be who kept watch and cause with him.
