The Fine Gael education plan would increase primary class sizes, accrding Fianna Fáil Dáil candidate for Cavan/Monaghan, Margaret Conlon.

She added that even the Irish National Tecahers Organisation has warned its members that the Fine Gael education proposal would be bad for schools.
“Fine Gael should be honest with parents about the fact that their plans would increase class sizes in our primary schools”, Mrs Conlon said today.
“Fine Gael has only set out funding for about 1,000 extra primary teachers. 2,000 extra teachers are needed just to keep class sizes at their current level, and Fine Gael only offering 1,000, class sizes would have to rise if they got into government”, she said.
“The INTO has also come out against the Fine Gael education plan, saying that it is proposing to have schools compete for money from an fund and have discretion no how to spend it.”
“Market force and economics should have no place in our education system.”
“Fianna Fáil, by contrast, has committed to hiring 4,000 more primary teachers in the next five years. This is on top of the 5,000 extra we have put in place since 2002. Fianna Fáil will reduce class sizes. Fine Gael will increase them. It’s as simple as that.”

“Fine Gael want to take regressive steps for our education system, but we are focusing on the next steps forward,” she concluded.
