I'd reckon probably yes, seeing as under Fitzgerald they came VERY close to FF in the election in terms of seats... I dont know for sure, but I'd say yes possibly back then... but then again, back then, there wasnt exactly widescale polling.
In October 1982 they were level at 36% core and 42% net. Theres always been a gap since.

not nationally however in 1979 they actually polled below Labour in Dublin Euro I'm sure

FF was founded in 1927. The question is on whether they ever came second in an opinion poll.
