Spectacular lies by Willie O'Dea on 'Campaign Daily'

I'm just watching "campaign daily" and i am gobsmacked by the unbelieveable lies he came out with!

"Detection rates have increased significantly under this government"

Detection rates have COLLAPSED under FF/PDs!
There was a 43% detection rate in 1997, and it fell to 35% in 2004! i think it was 36% in 2005

"fine gael and labour introduced hardly no criminal justice legislation onto the statute books in their time in office"

An absolute 100% lie! some of the most seminal pieces of criminal justice legislation of the last 25 years were introduced by the rainbow government.

    Domestic Violence Act 1996
Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking Act) 1996
    Proceeds of Crime Act 1996
    Criminal Assets Bureau Act 1996
Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act 1997
    Criminal Law Act 1997
    Bail Act 1997

There were other lies too. But i will have to watch it again to get them down correctly!

Fair enough, but he totally messed up Timmins. FG seriously needs to consider who they put on TV.
The political establishment lacks both vision and courage.

With respect to CAB, the Proceeds of Crime and Criminal Justice Act 1996, these were all originally drfated by Fianna Fail but accepted by Nora Owen in the wake of the Veronica Guerin murder.

Did anyone else here him on Rodney Rice today? Within 5 minutes, he was into his familiar old "I didn't interrupt you" routine, while shouting down any other opinions.

Why oh Why do we elect people like this to national politics?

    More lies...

"Economic growth under the rainbow was half what it is now..."

Current growth rates - in the region of 5%...in 1997, in the region of 11%. So growth rates are half NOW what they WERE under the rainbow.

Unemployment...when the rainbow took office, unemplyment was close to 16%...in 1997 it was down to 10%

    Inflation...less than 2% in 1997, over 5% now.

This myth that FF/PD's are better handlers of the economy shouldn't be allowed to be trotted out time and again unchallenged.

O’Dea ‘support letter’ sparks dirty tricks claim

    By Jimmy Woulfe, Mid-West Correspondent
DEFENCE Minister Willie O’Dea was last night at the centre of a bitter row between two Fianna Fáil candidates.

A letter with the minister’s signature was sent out to about 3,000 voters in Limerick West. It called on them to give their vote preference to FF newcomer Cllr Niall Collins ahead of outgoing TD John Cregan.

Mr Cregan said he was very angry, but had been assured by the Limerick East-based minister that he had not put out any such letter.
The party’s director of elections in Limerick West, former defence minister Michael Noonan, said he has ordered an immediate investigation, saying it smacked of “dirty tricks”.

However, Mr Collins insists the minister did sign the letter, which he in turn had sent out to voters.

The contentious letter was sent to about 3,000 voters in Bruff, Knocklong and Kockainey who have transferred from Limerick East to Limerick West after a revision of the boundary.

In the letter, Mr O’Dea calls on voters to support Mr Collins and then “continue” their support for Mr Cregan.

Niall Collins said Mr O’Dea agreed to sign the letter after he approached him.

However, Mr Noonan said: “Mr O’Dea totally denies sending out any such letter.

“I consider it a very serious matter for anybody outside the constituency to intrude in the affairs of West Limerick, and more particularly to look for a preference vote for any one candidate, above the other.

It is very annoying and smacks of a dirty tricks campaign. I have my suspicions but can’t say anything until anything is proved.”

However, Mr Collins is adamant that the letter seeking voter support for him came from Mr O’Dea’s office.

“This is absolutely all above board and I am not into that game,” he said.

“He signed the letter and I sent it out. His assistant Fergal O’Brien gave the signed letter back to me.”

Mr Cregan said when he raised the sending of the letter with the minister, Mr O’Dea denied having anything to do with it.

Mr Cregan said: “I am quite disappointed about this letter as I have serviced this part of East Limerick which came into the West since the last election. I was very disturbed about it and rang Willie O’Dea and he reassured me that he did not send such a letter.”

Here is someone who benefitted more from the creation of the PDs than anybody else. Once upon a time, O Malley was the FF poll topper and Peadar Clohessy was his running mate. O Dea was the third man on the ticket, whose only chance of election would be if FF won a third seat in this traditional 2FF 2FG and one Lab (alternating between Jim Kemmy and Lab). Then O Malley et al formed the PDs and O Dea sat on the fence. If he thought for a second that he would do better under the PDs, he would have jumped too. He remains such an untrustworthy character, that Ahern, Albert and Haughey made him wait years for a cabinet seat. When he was a candidate, it was rumoured that he also misrepresented his qualifications, claiming to be a qualified accountant at the time.

Few should be surprised at his cure hoor politics.
