Fianna Fail is the main reason that an ideology-based politics didn't emerge in Ireland. And some ideology is crucial in politics because it fosters a passion in politicians to change the world in the image of that ideology, and to roll back the ideology of the opposition. Without it, parties become purely vehicles for saying and doing whatever is necessary to get and maintain power, and then doing nothing coherent. Principle, which is so crucial, becomes irrelevant because there's nothing at the core to be principled about. As a consequence, the main thrust of politics becomes local, and all about getting goodies for your own constituency to increase your popularity. FF is entirely to blame for the political culture in this country. Without them, a more sophistical culture will emerge.

fianna fail being in power for so long resulted in a big percentage of irish political contests essentially being reduced to sporting contests, with a huge chunk of the electorate more or less supporting their team instead of voting for a candidate who would work for the community's interests.

nobody could name a fianna fail core belief apart from winning elections (the true reason) and the usual old guff about preserving the fourth green field and the irish language.

Some day, we will look back on FF and say, you know, they weren't all that bad ... When something far more malevolent and toxic than an axis of FF/FG confronts us. But for now, yes, FF were, from the moment of their founding, despicable. They were opportunists, who would always put their country second to their own benefit. But a good second.

our country was betrayed by it's own system, by the political parties, by the tribalism and it's peoples own greed. If FG/Lab/SF/ULA were in power the same would have happened. FF won the contest for better goodies and all the parties would have fought over the peoples votes by throwing out as much promises as the next. I asked you before and i'll ask you again would the ULA cut PS workers pay in the good times, would they have cut taxes and stopped spending? ULA got seats because of the people's anger against FF, it's the same with FG/Lab/SF. the political parties in ireland are backwards and we need to move on.

The system of politics in ireland puts the party and politician over the people, we the people of ireland are still a bunch of tribes that make up a country and here comes the greed part, if it wasn't for the bailout, FF would have still been in power. why is that?

which translates as "private property bad" i want to be able to buy my own house and land someday.

the pawns in the ULA might just be nice lefties, but the bosses ain't
    1) There's socialism and then's there wanting a fair shake. Distraction and show-trialling has never worked, it's not about to work now, now answer my question? How does it benefit anyone to be pro-FF in a mess caused... by FF?

    2) No, it wasn't the system, it was the people who instituted it over six successive governments and turned it into establishment vs. loonies. It would have happened under FG, not so much under Labour or ULA. Who knows what SF might have done, if they even know what they're up to themselves. Yes we do need to move on. We need to move on as a country, and to do that, we need to cast off tribalism. That begins with the largest, most tribal tribe of all. FF.

    3) Did I say I agreed with collectivism? No. I said state and church assets belong to the people, not people's houses and land. Nice try, trollface.

Anyone that defends what FF has done to our generation is a traitor to this country and our generation. That's not rubbish, that's a cold fact.
