Its not a putsch against Bertie. Its being orchestrated to protect Bertie. The more of Bertie's private life is in the public domain, the more shielded he is from an electoral backlash.

That argument is absurd. Think it through. FF hoping that the public would rally to the party through a sense of 'poor auld Bertie' for a second time? That would be an insane risk to take, particularly since it would be double edged in that information would ultimately have to be released that was given to the Tribunal (and no doubt Ahern will have to give some details during the week) that might fundamentally weaken Ahern one way or another (indeed my own sense is that Ahern would have stood down before this if something more serious were to emerge, otherwise he'd be entirely discredited and would be forced to resign in disgrace if he did go on the win the election and then the Mahon tribunal sandbagged him with some new revelations).

Having said that I think FF are hoping that a 'poor Bertie' effect will occur at this point and the opposition are clearly terrified that it will or is.

    How is that absurd?

Albert could'nt be arsed. The only one in FF who ever raised problems about where Bertie slept at night was that ************************************ Smith down in Tipp North. Let's hope Kath O'Meara takes his ************************1ng seat off him. Maire Hoctor is a decent woman and deserves support.

If Bertie wants to stop all these leaks he should call in Paddy the Plummer.

    It was Paddy the Plasterer.

He doesn't want to stop the leaks. The more info that is leaked the better.

FF have really done their homework on this. They have the Opposition by the balls.

    Why wouldn't they?

It is in their interests for the the media to raise the ire of the electorate re. Bertie's private life, because they know that the electorate will vent that ire by voting FF.

And why would anyone else do it, given that they could end up in the High Court a la Geraldine Kennedy?

The Opposition need to expose this conspiracy very soon. Poor Bertie is the only game in town at the moment.
I wouldn't be surprised lol. back in Oct/Nov last year, mary O'Rourke spoke publicly and said that the source of the leaks about the 'dig out' money were very close to home.

It's true that the one thing a political rival(s) hates is a lot of publicity for his/her/their opponent. Since Bertie called the election he has been the main news story and headline. And now the PDs have got in on the act. Tonight they were the news headlines and tomorrow morning McDowell will be on the front pages of all the papers. And what's the news? There's no news. The Pds are still in government with FF, just like they have been for the last five years. Even today he grabbed headlines and put a spoiler out on a story the Sindo were working on and the journalist was stupid enough to tell them about. Fantastic manipulation of the media.

And Bertie will make a statement late next week after his headline grabbing visit to the North. That statement and any resulting questions that will bring up, should keep Bertie and FF on the front pages and on the news headlines well into the week after next. And after that statement McDowell will also get a day or two grabbing headlines by saying the PDs accept what Bertie says etc.

Add all that to Berties meeting with Paisley at the site of the battle of the Boyne on May 11th and his address to the British parliament and you can see that FF, and to a lesser extent the PDs, will be the headline news coming right up to the election. Poor Enda's 'contract with the people' isn't even being mentioned anymore. And the only way that Labour can get close to the front pages is if they take out an ad

FF's election campaign begins this week:

A wounded Bertie straps himself to a tree a la Cu Culainn to oversee Peace in our Time at the Northern Assembly, and then carries the fire of Ireland into the heart of the British Establishment at Westminister. Its a truely brilliant strategy.

Someone in the Opposition has to call his bluff before its too late.

Yes. I'd forgotten about Aunty Mary's comments... perhaps she meant the Lenihan home ;-)

Can't agree with QT at all though... Bertie looked pretty shook to me on the WIP tonight... in fact I might even go so far as to say he looked "cracked".
