Interesting to read in "The Boss" how MacSharry turned the bugging-gate fiasco to his own advantage. MacSharry protested that the reason he had bugged the conversations with Martin O'Donoghue was because certain outside influences were offering to provide money for people in Fianna Fáil who would vote against Haughey.
He was able to turn the damning evidence against himself into the honourable actions of somebody who was trying to protect the integrity of the FF party against shady external forces who were seeking to influence the leadership contest by bribery.
Deeply ironic, given the subsequent revelations about Haughey but MacSharry's chutzpah was breathtaking and it paid off for him as he survived as a Senior Front Bencher unlike the hapless Sean Doherty who was thrown to the wolves to save Haughey's bacon.
Two cute Connaught men, one of whom thrived and the other who went on a downward spiral ending in a premature death.
