Will Cowen hang on until 2014?

As we all know, Cowen is supposed to call an election by 2012 at the latest, but that is because of legislation limiting a Dail to a 5 year term. As far as I'm aware the constitution limits the Dail to a 7 year term. As FF/GP/significant others hold the balance of power in the Dail in theory they could pass legislation which would revoke the existing legislation and return us to the constitutionally allowed 7 year term. As we all know Cowen has one of the thickest necks ever to be seen in Irish politics, especially after he decided to fight SF's legal challenge to hold the bye elections. As we all know, himself included, he is toast after the next election. Would he be therefore brazen enough to draft legislation to allow him to continue to 2014?

I wouldn't be surprised if he came out with something like that.

It honestly strikes me as something he might be brazen enough to attempt. Would the Greens stand for it?

I'd like to see him try that on. Might be what it takes to cause a revolution.

The 7 year itch is a myth. Technically there is a provision but it's been pooh-poohed on this forum as a non-runner. GE will be May/June 2011, end of story and end of Brian Cowen.
