FF mayor calls for Cowen to resign

    [COLOR=#000000]
A Fianna Fáil mayor has said it is time for Taoiseach Brian Cowen to resign.

Niall O'Neill, a councillor in Midleton, Co Cork, called Mr Cowen's Cabinet colleagues "chickens" if none had the courage to take over from him

We need to radically change every system that has enabled the wholesale destruction of the Irish landscape, rural and urban. There is no time for incremental step by step measures. The systems have failed utterly and the only hope for a real recovery requires the rule book to be torn up completely.

Sadly past experience of Irish mayors tends to make one think loon, but in seriousness, it's difficult for any politician, particularly one on the lower ranks to come out against a party leader.

The Mayor of Midleton told the paper: “Fianna Fáil has no choice but to replace the leader.

“He is too associated with the sins of the past Government. If you are laboured by the past, it is very hard to drive forward with an anchor tying you down.”

“I have heard it said that none of the Cabinet would want the job because it is a poisoned chalice. If that was the case, you’d have to ask if the country was being led by 15 chickens in the Cabinet?
That's a coherent point. Fair play to him for coming out and saying what he believes and not hiding behind anonymous quotes to papers as so many other politicians do.

Fair play to him, but he would want to go a step further and call for the whole gov. To resign, greens included. We are in such a state and it aint getting any better.

interesting, and meanwhile: "Mary Harney has laughed off speculation the Coalition could fall apart by Christmas."

Surely Cowen was tarnished by the sins of the past 2 years ago. Why didn't we hear this Mayor then?

I think this is the start of it now. Cowen to set-up as sacrificial lamb in next years bloody coup.

Can we assume this guy wants to be a FF candidate in the next election, and is begining his campaign now?

Reading the quotes, the man is far from a loon.
He is 100% correct; even if Cowen was doing a competent job (and few believe he is) he is too tainted by senior association with successive administrations that caused the whole catastrophe.

Interesting that he says FF have totally lost it in "last 10 years"
Nice to see that there are people in FF who now realise the irreparable damage of Ahern and his cohorts.
Pity they didn't come to that conclusion 15 years ago when his shady carry on was there for everyone to see but most (media and piss weak opposition parties) choose to ignore while FF of course chose to reward and practically beatify.

To hell with a cowen resignation . If that mayor or any other FFer had an ounce of morality running through their bodies it would be an general election they'd be calling for. Anything else is just pandering butt covering tactics.

Cowen's front left wheel has now been punctured, losing even more traction.

Now that one of the faithful has said it publicly, it's only a matter of time before he will be parked permanently in the garage.
