FG Stamp duty policy to threaten 1,000s of jobs - Cowen

The Minister for Finance, Brian Cowen T.D. has called Fine Gael’s proposals on stamp duty ‘daft’ and said that the proposals will put thousands of jobs at risk.

“It is poorly thought through and will disrupt the housing market, put thousands of jobs at risk and threaten the value of everyone's house not just those who are transacting.”

“The daftness is compounded by Labour who are so desperate to cobble together a deal with Fine Gael that they will eventually acquiesce in a policy which will see tax relief going to those buying expensive houses while at the same time they are criticising my progressive reforms of PRSI, reforms which will reduce the tax burden on all ordinary workers and families.”

“If this is an example of how policy is going to be formulated in a sophisticated economy like Ireland's, God help us. They are a joke,” concluded Minister Cowen.

Can it be ten years since FG was last in office? They haven't put the downtime to much use. Even Labour want this fool notion of phasing Stamp Duty reform kept out of the manifesto.

Brian has got some legal training. Unfortunately he has little or no expertise in the field of economics. Perhaps he should consider becoming Minister for Justice. He is a prisoner of the mandarins at the Department of Finance. Bertie ignored Brian's advice in the course of his Ard Fheis speech. Where does Brian stand on this?
