He was a crook but don't forget that this country was on its knees in 1987 and Haughey led one of the gratest governments we ever had to turn around the economy and get us ready for the boom that followed.

Agreed. I think Bertie is probably the worst taoiseach in our history. Haughey made the country much better though. Without him Temple bar would be a bus depot and the IFSC wouldn't have created the thousands of jobs and huge tax revenue it did. The first national pay agreements were great too, he got this country moving.

I hear Vincent Browne is currently writing a biography on Haughey. Should be interesting!

Haughey has poisoned the political life of this country now for over a generation.

Besides, whether at the end of this recession there will be anything left of the unsustainable boom his policies first put into motion (on the back of the prudence of predecessors, the patriotically responsible behaviour of the opposition and the indulgent patience of our European partners) is an open question.

The extent to which the boom improved the quality of life of the average Irish citizen is also very much open to question.

The fact the boom was mismanaged doesnt' take away the fact that Haughey took the country from being on its knees to being ready to boom.
