This is the Jim McDaid school of thought..i.e “the country needs FF” so it’s in FF’s interest to get out before they become radioactive as opposed to just toxic. Remember they haven’t even got into the business of serious income tax increases yet which is more or less inevitable. I’m sure there are many in FF who would prefer to see FG and Lab given this job.

When the likes of WO'D admit that their consituency "work" is done by half-a-dozen public servants acting on their sole bidding, and the likes of Harney has a huge team of spin doctors, sorry, "advisors" you begin to realise why they want to cling on to the illusion of power so hard. When someone else, anyone else, has that advantage they'll look at least as good.

It is one more reason why I don't believe this govt will make it to 2012.
If FF/Green hang on through Easter 2011 then they will not be on the platform for the Centenary of the Rising - its as simple as that. FF/Labour will hang onto government for the Rising celebrations for dear life and go to the country on the back of it in May/June 2016. Enda Kenny, if Taoiseach, will sell his children to hang on as Taoiseach through Easter 2016 if needs be.

Cowen is an FF traditionalist. He knows the symbolism of having FG lord it over them on at the Easter 2016 celebrations and this must be playing heavily on his mind. The call may be to go by this Autumn, take their hammering, but survive to maybe get back in government at the next election with Labour.

I do not think the FF backbenchers are that far sighted though.

I think the extent to which 2016 is weighing on their minds is exaggerated. They don't look that far ahead. Including Cowen, imo.

    I'm open to evidence otherwise.

It would only be right and fitting that FG would preside over the 2016 commemorations given the fact that the likes of Collins, Cosgrave and Desmond Fitzgerald were in the GPO

Absolutely. FF can hold theirs down at Boland's Mills (where there was very little fighting) if they like.

The majority cannot therefore be the elite.

[FONT=Arial]Take it down from the mast Irish traitors,
    The flag we Republicans claim,
It can never belong to Free Staters,
You brought on it nothing but shame.

Then leave it to those who are willing,
To uphold it in war and in peace,
To those who intend to continue,
    Until England’s cruel tyranny cease.

You have taken our brave Liam and Rory,
You have murdered young Richard and Joe,
Your hands with their blood are still gory,
Fulfilling the work of the foe.

But we stand with Enright and Larkin,
    With Daly and Sullivan bold,
We will break down the English connection,
And bring forth the nation you sold.

Or, God forbid, we might have something that would never occur to FF- an FG Taoiseach who thinks it's ok to, like... include everybody in the commemorations. What with the civil war being over, and everything...

That is either very funny because you mean to parody the political movement you're a member of (and I sincerely hope you do) or it simply funny how civil war politics can still bring a tear to the eye of the average brain-dead Fianna Fáiler.
