Relevance to appointment of Minister of Defence?

You talk about "responsible government" yet you're happy enough to leave the military without elected civilian control. How can anyone take your posts seriously with guff like that?

Next Minister of Defence - claim back our passports

The next Minister of Defence should be a man who has the bottle to organise a team of Irish Rangers to sneak into Israel and claim back our passports.

Elected civilian control !!. Every top rank in the Gardai & the Army is a Government appointment.

You could add the Ministry of Defence to the Ministry of Gealtacht Affairs.

Between the two you would have enough work for one person if necessary.

First off, we don't have a Ministry of Defence, we have a Department of Defence. we don't have ministries, we have departments. But then facts never have been your strong point.

Secondly, of course senior appointments in Gardai/DF are made by the government, it's part of the functions of government, just like every other major State organisation.

That is why we elect a government. Would you prefer a military or police dictatorship?

Who do you suggest appoints the Garda Commissioner or DF Chief of Staff, considering they are the key security personnel charged with maintaining national security?

You are like most of the keyboard warriors on P.ie, utterly clueless to what goes on in the real world and how it functions.

It`s all about who you know.

Bertie the Spoofer appointed friends to Boards solely because they were "friends".

Government should not appoint senior people. There should be a board of top civil servants and retired civil servants that interview & choose the most suitable canditate.

You are a keyboard warrior yourself and also clueless.

What goes on in the FF real world has us where we are

Are you saying that neither Fachtna Murphy nor Dermot Earley deserve their positions as GC and CoS?

Murphy was one of the most effective and experienced detectives in the force, first chief of the Criminal Assets Bureau and a deputy commissioner for operations.

Earley was one of the original 12 officers to received Ranger training in the US and was involved in setting up special forces training in the DF and later the Army Ranger Wing, he served in senior roles in the Military College and in the Operations wing of the DF, completed several tours overseas on UN duty, was a key military advisor to the UN Sec Gen and served as Deputy CoS.

Are you saying neither of these men is qualified for the position they hold and that they were only appointed to these roles because they were "friends" of Bertie or Biffo?

In any democracy, the military and police chiefs are appointed by the elected civilian government. That's the way it is in the US, UK and all our European partners. Are you saying we should be different?

Most certainly not. However, Biffo will still have to find one of his muppets to fill the role until the election when FF will get booted into oblivion. Then Enda will get to apoint a Defence Minister.
