There is a distinct difference between republican ideals and frothing at the mouth nationalism.

I think the Blanketmen had the right idea a decade or so ago, when they tried to organize Public Meetings around the Dublin suburbs, but I wouldn't attend any debate with a Trot on the panel, so I wouldn't attend one way or the other.

Unfortunately it isn't just republicanism that the Irish left are divorced from but basic common sense.

unfortunately the left in Ireland is disjointed and divided over relatively small issues, James Connolly was a republican and socialist, he believed that the national question was inseparable from class struggle as a defeat for imperialist capitalism and establishing a democratic socialist republic. Not quite divorced in my view.

Don't think the left is divorced from common sense, you'd have all probably said the same about Corbyn last week but the message seemed reasonable with many "sensible" voters voting labour

What i find baffling is how anyone could describe themselves as republican nationalist and be in favour of mass immigration that will destroy Irish culture and identity, something that a true nationalist would do everything to protect.

    Modern Lefties
    - free handouts for lazy sponging knackers
    - multiculturalists and pro immigration , flooding the country with men to keep lefty sisters all happy.
    - reward women for getting pregnant with sailors at age 15 with a free house in ballymun
    - trades unionists , troublemakers in the workplace
    - high taxes on working people
    - crippling high taxes on small business entrepreneurs
    - equal opportunities forcing premier league teams to employ one legged diabetic elderly blind klingons onto their team to reach 'quotas'

A lot of the hard left stuff you get from the likes of Clare Daly and her crew is a Marxist-inspired socialism, that is blind to nationalism. It's all about the class struggle, and they see patriotism as just a ruse used to manipulate young working class people into maintaining the hegemony of the capitalist elite.

Big problem with our hard left is they have no vision- it's just all protest against this, fight against that. There's an opening there for sensible left-wing politics, but there's a dearth of people who represent such a thing.

If I could, I would keep this brand of Irish left-wing politics away from republicanism. Regardless of what you think of Sinn Féin, at least they are pragmatic, unlike the left that we have down here.
