Government claims it no longer needs referendums to sign treaties

Cabinet to thwart the people on treaty vote - National News - Independent.ie

THE Government believes it has ensured that the new European fiscal treaty will not require the support of the people by way of referendum, the Sunday Independent can reveal.

Ministers feel the treaty, a final draft of which is expected to be agreed at an EU council meeting tomorrow, has been sufficiently watered down so as to avoid the need to give voters a say.
It's official, our government is nothing more than a rubber stamp for Brussels. We the people no longer have any say in the laws which effectively govern us and our country.

This is utterly untrue and you know it. Fairly poor and misleading OP TBH.

As a general rule, no the Irish state doesn't need referendums to sign International treaties and never has. Article 29 of the constitution.

    Labour signing away Irish sovereignty

We have seen in the past few days the Labour party has first used an SI to try and put draconian legislation in place to give away the power for our country to legislate the Internet. We have seen the Labour party sign ACTA and sign away even more digital rights along with farming, pharmaceutical, and intellectual rights to foreign governments.

The sindo (yes a total rag but even a broken clock is correct twice a day) reports the government no longer needs any input from the people to pass treaties.

And because of this they have already signed ACTA and are looking to sign the new fiscal treaty as well.

The only hope as outlined in the article is if Higgins steps in and refers the treaty to the Supreme Court, but sure, he didn't for ACTA and since it is his own party that is pushing these draconian measures through, does anyone see him breaking with the party ranks and stepping in for the rights of the people?

I guess this is his first real test as President. It will show if he is truly a man of the people who is willing to help all citizens or another shill for the Labour party sent to tow the party line and the peoples will be damned.

Is it? Is it really? How is this untrue? Did you not remember two treaties that were pushed onto us until we voted the way they want. This is just one step further in that now they dont need to listen to the people, who are just in the way.

The Government has no authority to transfer the despised sovereignty(I wonder: why do those foreign b-stards want it) of the Irish People to foreigners.

This is a monstrous bluff because any referendum they hold; will turn into a vote of confidence in their vision for the future and their handling of, shall we say, vital foreign affairs.

Nothing new for Labour; rem CCOB & his cronies in the 1970s. After each British Forces' mass murder, they increased collaboration with them.

Is it still possible for Higgins to block ACTA still?

How would referring it have made a difference?
