Sweden's Foreign Minister Backs EU Battlegroup Concept

Sweden presently holds the 6 month rotating EU Presidency and Foreign Minister Carl Bildt has expressed support for the EU Battlegroup concept, under which about 1,500 troops from three or more countries are on standby on a six-month rotation.

Mr. Bildt is also to have stated that the best way for the EU to improve its crisis management capability, of which Battlegroups are a part, is by implementing the Lisbon Treaty.

The image of Eurocorps parading and raising the flag prior to the new Sessions of the European Parliament springs to mind.

Yet another reason to vote Yes.
"Irish citizens . . . on ratification of the Treaty could be forced to become Euro soldiers." Sinn Féin claim on Maastricht in 'Democracy or Dependency' p.6. in 1992.

Shows the false merit of the arguement that if the "neutral" swedes are ok with it so should "neutral" ireland.
