In which group will Joe Higgins sit? Hardly the Socialists.

I would assume that frank ross and the Ex-green councillor/daughter of a ff president, will be able to block his entry.
Not that he might want to join New Labour and that ilk.

Interesting question. I think EU MEP candidates should make it clear with whom they will be aligning in the EP, and explain the ideology of that group.

I suspect that many voting for EU candidates in Dublin voted on the basis of (this time) ABFF, ABSF. but had no clue as the grouping their candidate might align with.

Do many of the voters know with whom in the Berlaymont their candidate will sit before they vote for them?

The Socialist Party is a member of the Committee for a Workers' International (CWI) internationally. I don't know if they have an EP grouping but chances are there is some international organization along those lines which is or will be represented in the EP.

The closest established group to his politics would probably be the UEL-NGL, although the fact that SF sit with that group could potentially cause problems.

In general Higgins is to the left of the UEL-NGL. There was talk before the elections of the formation of a new hard left group in the EU parliament, led by the French NPA (New Anti-Capitalist Party), but I don't think that the numbers will be there as the NPA fell just short of the threshold.

Isn't some trot heading a list doing well in France? If the left in the EU has splintered somewhat (as I beleive it has) they may be able to put together some loose anit-globalisation type grouping

Most likely the old SF group, the "Nordic Green-United Left" (GUE-NGL) - also known as the Communist group. The EACL is not an EP group. To get decent speaking-rights and EP funding, he will need to band with the the former group, which is the only Eurosceptic leftwing group, with around 34 MEPs. The figures below don't seem to take account oFF's decision to join the Liberals, which will mean the end of the UEN unless eurosceptics and the Far Right parties join up. A new Eurosceptic "European Conservatives" group is about to be formed, primarily out of existing EPP member parties tired of the party's slavish support for a Federal Europe. It will include the Tories, Polish Law and Justice (30% in the euros), the Czech ODS (President Kalus' former party which won the euros unexpectedly) with a few on the Far Right also trying to get entry (though the Tories won't let the more extreme parties in). Overall then, one consequence of this election will be a stronger voice for the Eurosceptics and Eurocritics, which can only be a welcome progression for democracy in Europe and accountability.

Higgins will not be joining the PES. That at least is for certain. To join the Socialist Group in the European Parliament you have to have stood in the elections for a member party of the PES. That rules Higgins well and truly out.
