Your title is misleading. Socialism is not suffering. In fact it's on the increase in most western european countries. Just look at Greece and France (and Dublin). However the "Socialist" parties you refer to are actually right wing reformist parties like New Labour in Britain and the SPD in Germany. Rather than judge a party on its name you should judge it on it's actions.
Folkebevægelsen mod EU (People's movement against EU, a leftist anti-Lisbon list) have 6.9% in Denmark.
The new Left Front in France (Front de gauche) has 6.3%. Also in France NPA at 4.8%, Lutte Ouvriere at 1.2%.
In Britain the No2EU and the SLP are polling about 3.2%
Greece the Left is getting 12%
Germany Die Linke 7%
Still, even as the investor consensus ravages the euro, it's worth remembering that the same herd instinct not long ago was pronouncing last rites for the dollar. Last year, as China's central bank chief called for a new global currency and Russian central bankers dumped greenbacks to buy euros, many saw the dollar's decline as inevitable. Now, the dollar is riding high, and the euro looks bedraggled.
