    Libertas Supports Torture

I was just browsing Libertas's glossy blue website when I came across Eline van den Broek's blog, in which she supports torture:

Even if that means a suspect is put under pressure to give details of plans. Sometimes there is not enough time to relax a criminal and it is better to get a confession. Let us not forget that these terrorists are trained in camps not to break during an interview. Traditional methods have no effect on these hardened men and women. Must innocent people die because the police treat the terrorists with a kid gloves approach?
    I choose peace and security
Yet it happens. And not in naïve, non-cities like Sydney or Stockholm, but in cities more terrorists have visited in London the IRA, ETA in Madrid. And still managed to place bombs and killing people. I believe that European citizens must be protected against such attacks, against such criminals who on the backs of innocent people to make their point. And therefore, if the choice is between saving civilians or torture, I say: then torture. With pain in the heart, but determined. For those citizens who are entitled to protection, security and peace.

Her blog on torture: Libertas's Dutch candidate is pro Cheney when it comes to "putting pressure on" to extract information:
Blog Eline van den Broek - Eline.info

This website contains a link to a radio broadcast where she defends her view and says that if elected she would put this on the EU agenda:
Europartij Libertas voor martelen - Nieuws - Europa Kiest - NOS

The danger of voting for a mixed pack with no manifesto is that you simply don't know what you're voting for.

    Torture:

    Its not moral
    It's inhuman
    It isn't legal
    It doesn't work.

She's obviously a loon. But that doesn't mean it's party policy, any more than a Tory back-bencher's comments on castrating the underclass would be official Tory policy. But again, stretched themselves too thin and too far, skimped on the quality control.

How do we know what Party policy is? If she is elected, she says she will push this on the EU agenda.

It is on the Libertas.eu website. What do you think would happen if your Tory M.P. put up a castration policy on his own website, never mind the official party site?

Yeah much as I don't like Libertas can't blame them for everything any of their members think. On the other hand we can blame them for the lack of quality control.

When I lived there, Tory MPs often came out with all kinds of outrageous sh1te, the MP in the constituency to the north of mine wanted Mandela kept in prison! You can't blame the party for idiotic statements by individuals speaking on their own behalves. You can blame them for lack of due diligence in the selection process certainly, and for embarking on a needless hubristic folly across a continent (Ganley losing the run of himself) that necessitated a rush to sign up candidates. But it's unfair to saythe party supports torture. If it did then you could be sure that cookie would be gone the next day.

We were told that there was going to be careful vetting of all candidates. Who are we supposed to blame if the candidates are anti-semitic or pro-torture ? Is it an accident, or did they tick the right boxes?

These endless shrill alarmist threads are torture, yet I'm still around so you may be wrong there.

I like Eline, I think she's great but I disagree with her one this. What's really great though is that she's able to have a discussion about it without resorting to general shrill alarmist name calling nonsense. What's even better is I'm able to do it without resorting to calling her a fascist.

If you can find over 600 people who can agree on absolutely every political issue, fine, go create your own party and oppose Libertas. If you can't then stop pretending that Libertas should be one of them.

She isn't just any candidate, though - she's the lead candidate in Holland. And that piece has been on the official Libertas site for at least a week. That's not really the equivalent of a local Tory mouthing off to the press.

A vote for Libertas is a vote for Libertas, surely?
