Former EU accountant writes book about her victimisation

Marta Andreasen, the former chief accountant of the EU, has just published a book on the victimisation she suffered when she refused to buckle under extreme pressure to sign off the EU's accounts in 2001. It really is an eye-opener...

As soon as Miss Andreasen began looking at the EU's accounting system, she saw that it was a shambles. Between the 2000 and 2001 accounts, €200 million had gone missing without explanation. She was told these were "loans" which had been â written off'. Senior officials were authorised to hand out huge sums without any proper records being kept. Accounts were kept on spreadsheets which could be accessed and changed without leaving any trace of who made the changes.
The system was open to fraud in every direction. Almost immediately, however, Miss Andreasen found herself being pressured to sign off the 2001 accounts which, as she said, would be a criminal offence, since this was the responsibility of her predecessor and she had been given none of the information needed to know whether or not they were correct.
It soon became obvious that her attempts to introduce changes were being blocked at every turn. The German budget commissioner, although initially sympathetic, was hopelessly out of her depth. Thus began a horror story only too familiar from the experience of previous whistleblowers, from Van Buitinen to Bernard Connolly, author of The Rotten Heart of Europe – except that Miss Andreasen insists she was not a "whistleblower" but merely trying to do her job.
Her telephone was bugged. She was followed outside the building. In desperation she sought an interview with Neil Kinnock, the Commission Vice-President charged with fighting fraud, but she describes how he treated her with "bullying" contempt. At Lord Kinnock's instigation, she was first suspended and consigned to a tiny office without a telephone, then dismissed, finally to face disciplinary proceeding

It underlines the extent of the gravy-train and the coercion and bullying that the Brussels Establishment is prepared to go to to defend it from those who want to purge it of sleaze. That the EP Budgetary Affairs Committee voted to prevent publication of the Galvin Report on MEP's abuse of the expenses-system is another example thereof, and indicates the culture of arrogance and entitlement has not diminished.

She makes clear that she was never a 'whistleblower', she was vilified and sacked for merely trying to do her job legally. During her 'hearing' before the Commission, only one made any attempt to listen to her. Lord Kinnock (four legs bad, two legs good, anyone?), the Welsh windbag, apparently made gurning face gestures throughout in order to indicate his contempt for Andreasen, as if to make out she was insane.

And I thought UKIP were supposed to be 'little Englanders'??? First a leader with a French wife, then a candidate with Danish and Argentinian antecedents. Strange...

lnteresting verhofstadt- one of the striking things about oecd reports published in lreland within the last decade and specifically in health/education is the lack of response by departmental heads, coupled of course with irish media inattention.

The EU is very good at dictating what it percieves be good to others.
But it is very thin skinned when it is asked to face up to its own institutional shortcomings.
Sort of like the Irish political business establishment.
It will need to see the gallows before it starts acknowledging its failings.
Its only a chat, we ain't the world council.
In 2000 the Women's Institute in Britain gave Tony Blair the slow hand clap to demonstrate their contempt.
It was dignified, restrained and effective.Doesn't Bertie deserve the same scorn. No shouting, no abuse, no agression just a relentless slow clap whenever he speaks in public would be enough to end that man's presidential fantasy.

UKIP are one of the strangest political organisations I've ever examined, they truely have the widest and wierdest bunch of candidates and the highest level of infighting (per capita).

Wonder how they'll do without the hype of the that nutter, ex Labour MP and talk show host; the uber tanned and misunderstood Robert Kilroy Silk.
