What has Europe ever done for us? OK, apart from...

I asw a thread asking what the EU was about and s omebody went on a rant. I was reminded of the Life of Brian quote of "What have the Romans ever done for us?"...when everything is pointed out, Cleese returns with "Yes, but apart from public order, sanitation, police..." Katy Sinnot had a poster "What has Europe ever done for us?" but I don't think she would be a fan of Monty Python.

So here it goes. What has Europe ever done for us?
Apart from:
Bring Peace to waring enemies,
Advance Education,
Harness cultural advancement,
Protect the environment,
Introduce safety standards for children'd toys,
Fund structural improvement in poorer countries like Ireland,
Remove tarriffs so countries can trade and become mutually wealthy, not at the expense of each other,
Encourage free movement of people abroad,
Protect workers' rights,
Monitor pollution.....

Yeah....but apart from all that....what has Europe ever done for us?

Apart from:
Bring Peace to waring enemies,
Advance Education,
Harness cultural advancement-----------Eh ?
Protect the environment,---------------Laws ignored bu Government; people pay resultant fines. Rape of maritime resources encouraged surreptitiously.
Introduce safety standards for children'd toys-------But pander to China in every other respect.
Fund structural improvement in poorer countries like Ireland--------which is used by FF to open areas of the countryside up to Communist-Housing Block-type developments
Remove tarriffs so countries can trade and become mutually wealthy, not at the expense of each other,-------Aye.
Encourage free movement of people abroad-------Not in the interests of indigenous workers. Also; what are we paying them in dole at the moment ?
Protect workers' rights---------Maternity & Paternity rights, unfair dismissal, etc; yep. Everything regulating wages paid is employer-biased.
Monitor pollution.....---------And encourage Industrialisation, increasing pollution.

Yeah....but apart from all that....what has Europe ever done for us?

Imagine if we were left to our own devices since 1973 and had been left in a permanent FF-FG 'Gombeenarchy' type situation. No EU money, no EU legislation, no jobs etc. Just left to our own devices.

Do you think that the "thank you for saving us from our own stupidity" posters are going to work that well during the Lisbon 2 campaign ?

Probably not but i was dealing with the topic at hand and not bringing up Lisbon specifically, my guess is that if we hadn't had joined in 1973 then we would have joined in 74/75/76 etc. and seeing as we went to so much trouble to get in then lets stick it out and not pussy out off the back of Dodgy MEPs expenses & 1970s style bureaucracy.

So here it goes.

Bring Peace to waring enemies
Answear: That was the common market not the EU.

Advance Education
Answear: All would have happened anyway.

Harness cultural advancement
Answear: Too vague to respond.

Protect the environment
Answear: All possible via a european environment treaty.

Introduce safety standards for children'd toys
Answear: Would have happened anyway.

Fund structural improvement in poorer countries like Ireland
Answear: Structural funds were spent on contracts with EU firms so they got most of it back.

Remove tarriffs so countries can trade and become mutually wealthy, not at the expense of each other
Answear: That was the common market not the EU.

Encourage free movement of people abroad
Answear: That was the common market not the EU.

Protect workers' rights
Answear: *cough* Laval, Ruffert...

Monitor pollution
Answear: All possible via a european environment treaty.

Plus look at what we have had to agree to.
Militarisation including serving french colonialism in Chad.
Shafting of our fishermen.
Undercutting of our labour market.
600 million a year in overregulation.
to mention a few.
