Polish News: Ganley to finance Libertas Polska compaign himself.

    Election funding

The election campaign in Poland will be financed by Declan Ganley himself, as current support for LPR and other fringe parties on the right wing of Polish politics have little support within the country and would consequently struggle to meet the costs themselves.

Though European election law insists that campaign funds must come from within the relevant nations, Ganley will secure loans taken out in Poland, so finding a way around the rule, it was revealed late last month. Libertas Polska will then default on the loans, forcing banks to seek recompense from Ganley himself.

I find this extremely worrying - a rich, elite and thusfar unelected businessman using his personal wealth to influence european elections.

It's legal, and imho a more honorable course of action to fork out your own money to promote your election campaign rather than selling political favours like some Establishment parties do. I can understand the Establishment not taking kindly to someone muscling in on their turf - they are like a cartel, conspiring to maintain the closed-shop of the two and a half party-system.

there is nothing honourable in breaking the spirit of electoral laws in order to personally bankroll an election campaign in a foreign jurisdiction. The man is attempting to buy votes. I'm sure he is doing this right across Europe and this makes it clear that he probably engaged in similar practises here to bank roll the Libertas No Campaign.

This really shows up his claims of a grassroots organisation of transparency and accountability to be a hypocritical farce.

Libertas Polska will be supported by the League of Polish Families (LPR) – a junior coalition partner in the 2006-2007 government, and Naprzod Polsko-Piast a small party created by former MPs from LPR and the Polish Peasant Party (PSL).
Libertas supporter Cookiemonster has repeatedly abused posters who pointed out the link between Libertas and the League of Polish Families. An apology would be in order.

The funding arrangement as described is clearly designed to avoid complying with the spirit of the law:
The election campaign in Poland will be financed by Declan Ganley himself, as current support for LPR and other fringe parties on the right wing of Polish politics have little support within the country and would consequently struggle to meet the costs themselves.

Though European election law insists that campaign funds must come from within the relevant nations, Ganley will secure loans taken out in Poland, so finding a way around the rule, it was revealed late last month. Libertas Polska will then default on the loans, forcing banks to seek recompense from Ganley himself.

Vice President Artur Zawisza was quoted in the Polityka weekly, March 28, as saying: ""The most important thing for banks is to assess the creditworthiness and the collateral. I know they consulted with Mr. Declan Ganley."
The League of Polish Families and their youth wing use the Nazi salute and involve themselves in street violence against gays - in one incident, throwing acid in the face of a gay man.

This is further evidence in support of the observation made by Village magazine last week that Ganley has a "deplorable attitude to the truth, transparency and moral conduct."

That FT sees no problem in this blatant attempt to circumvent Polish laws on campaign financing speaks volumes about his low standards. Liebertas' campaigns are imploding and will leave Ganley with a mountain of debt to repay in June.

Would you advocate the same manner of funding rules for ge in ireland so FT ?

Also, are we sure it is his own money that is funding it ?

Ganley must be made of money. If he choses to throw it away, his perrogative.

I dont see how taking out loans with the intention of defaulting (as suggested in the Polish press) and thus forcing the loans to fall on a foreign guarenteur as a way of avoiding the funding laws can be legal.
