    Election victory for Enda Kenny

FINE Gael leader Enda Kenny has been elected vice-president of the European People's Party at its congress in Rome. The largest political movement in Europe, it comprises Christian Democrat parties across the EU, including 11 serving prime ministers. Mr Kenny said his election would keep Fine Gael at the heart of the EPP. - Irish Independent

I would doubt it was an election in the meaningful sense of the word. I'm sure in these European political things everything is stitched up long beforehand.

As a matter of fact there is usually intense competition for the position. The EPP has something like 40 full member organisations, with another 25 associate members and observers.
John Bruton held the position for a couple of years, but left it last year when he moved to Washington. Considering Bruton's stature within the EPP and in European politics generally, it would have been impossible for FG to get a replacement elected last year - and they didn't.

For Kenny to get it this year is a major achievement. It must be the case that the major EPP parties fancy his chances of being Taoiseach at some point, and to have gotten the job he must have demonstrated a very high knowledge of the ins and outs of EU politics over the last few years.
    Congrats Enda!

Have to say, it won't do him any harm at all.

More fun then being in a group with a bunch of Communist parties.

On the original issue well done to Enda Kenny. It's a great honour and it well help him and the EPP.

Is he a Vice-President "without portfolio" like Barry used to be, or is it Enda's job to make the tea for the meetings as well ?

I suppose its the only election he'll ever win so he should make the most of it.
