Indeed the victory on Friday was a bit of a coup as there was some uncertainty over Enda winning considering that he was following in the footsteps of Bruton and that he has had a relatively short time as a player in European politics.

The field was 15 and Enda was one of 10 elected, each VP is then given a specific role to support the Presdient (former Belgian Premier Wilfred Maartens) and the Sec. General who is an EPP employee. All in all it was a successfull Congress for Fine Gael who have remained as a leading player in Europe's largest political party.

    Congrats Enda.

Fair play - so now Kenny is a VP of EPP, and Quinn is a VP of PES - does Ireland have any other significant positions within the European Parties?

Actually, de Rossa is VP of PES, and Quinn is Treasurer (which is actually a more senior position, as there are quite a few VPs in PES).

I don't know why you say that. No matter what your political perspective, this is important from an Irish perspective. Kenny now has one of the top ten positions in the EPP, which is an enormous organisation by any standards.
Due to its size and dominance in the Commission, at heads of government level and particularly in the parliament, nothing gets through at EU level without the say-so of the EPP.

Kenny now has a position of influence in the EPP, John Bruton is directing EU affairs in Washington and it seems Avril Doyle and Simon Coveney have taken very senior roles within the EPP group in the EU Parliament.
That has to be significant from an Irish perspective
