US President Obama Backs Turkey's EU Membership Bid

PRAGUE (AFP)--U.S. President Barack Obama gave his backing Sunday to Turkey's bid to join the European Union, saying it would wrap the mainly Muslim nation into the European fold. Its accession to the bloc, which has 27 members, would be "an important signal" which would "firmly anchor" Turkey in Europe, said Obama in an address to E.U. leaders at a summit in the Czech capital Prague.

Not sure if Turkey is ready to join the EU yet, what it
still mistreating the Kurds. Besides, most of Turkey is
in Asia. You might as well ask Russia or Israel to join.

Have to agree here i think Obama should butt out of some EU affairs, but the sooner the EU expands and takes in Turkey, Crotia and other countries the better for us all.

    He can go ******************** himself!

well he has to say that doesn't he, Turkey is still a NATO member and a US ally (of sorts) in Iraq, Afghanistan, etc. However his / US opinion / position on the matter are largely a mute point as the matter will be decided by the EU members, many of whom are showing less and less support for same, not to mention there is a growing negativity in Turkey about EU membership.

I cannot see it happening, at least not in the next 10 - 20 years, then again much can change in a month let alone in a decade

Would he take Turkey in as the 51st state? Turkey should never be let into the EU.

To compare America and the EU is ridiculous.

Turkey has a population of over 70 millions, and one of the highest unemployment figures compared to the EU. As someone previously said, there are probably 8 million Turks sitting on their suitcases ready to come to the country with the highest social welfare system. Hang on a minute, that's us.
