The new 'Haider' of Austrian politics

Just when we thought Haider had been put back in his box in Carintha this guy comes along and stirs it all up again.

Ladies and Gents, of P.ie.. presenting a guy you going to hear a lot more of......

Heinz-Chirstian Strache!!

He is the new leader of the FPÖ (Austrain Freedom Party). Haider left that part last year, party because he found this guy to be too right wing (I kid you not)

Here are a sample of some of the Billboard ad dominating Austria's streets in the last two weeks:

(I will transalte some stuff for you, but to honest I don't think you will need it to get the general gist)
from:
http://www.fpoe.at
and
http://www.oesterreichbleibfrei.at/

This one says: Should this be our future!, Austria says: NO! Austria Stay Free!

Stop the Turkey-nonsense! No EU enrty for Turkey, end the EU Payments to Anakara, Immediate Referendum on Turisk entry. Austria, Stay Free!

Neutrality instead of EU Dictatorship!, Austria, Stay Free! We protect Austria (I will explain the emotiveness of this statment again)

He also had another one for the Veinnese elections that I can't find online right now the said 'Don't let Veinna turn into Istanbul'

His party's list got 15% of the vote in that election in Veinna last November.

Asutria's general election is scheduled for Autunm of this year.

How long will it be before a figure like Haider or Strache (he's only 36 by the way) emerges in Ireland?

There is something about nationalist extremists that makes my skin crawl.

And yes it won't be long before we have our own version.

I don't think it's a certainty that one will emerge here, there's no tradition of that sort of thing in Ireland. Look at the UK also - they must be given credit that no Le Pen-type party has seriously emerged there. Though their electoral system sort of precludes it, unlike ours. The danger, I suppose, is that these sorts of parties could become more attractive if the economy was to falter and people begin to look for a scapegoat.

The lesser orders are so easily led, unlike men of reason.
Now if barristers were facing competition from carloads of Polish lawyers coming off the ferries a different spin might be put on things

Yes, Bartek is a great man for driving a truck but will we allow him to use any professional qualifications he might have, here?

We already have Dr Ian Paisley of the DUP. He fits the description if you change the word "Muslim" to" Catholic".

And even though you might not consider him a "nationalist" in the Irish sense, I would consider him to be an extreme "British Nationalist".

So we do have one on this island after all.

Until mainstream politicians, leftist academics and liberal journalists take on board people's genuine and reasoned concerns regarding Islam in Europe, parties such as that will continue to grow.

I'm rightwing, but not xenophobic and isolationist. Most centre-rightists aren't either. I suspect too that this party, in common with the BNP and the Front National, have distinctly leftwing economic policies. (High min. wage, economic protectionism, anti-globalisation, high taxes, generous welfare.)

My own view for what it's worth is we will see the rise of a specific Immigration Control Party in the next 5 to 10 years and they should do quite well.

But I think that any Party in this State that makes an issue of people's religion or race will go nowhere eventually. Maybe that's why the BNP and it's predecessors, despite the huge anthipity towards immigration going back to the early 1960's at least, has done so poorly in Britain.

We will see one though and if it's Leader plays his cards right he may well have a major impact on the body politic.

Make no mistake, the Republic is changing fast, very very fast, in relation to it's ethnic, cultural and racial makeup. Anyone who thinks that this rate of Immigration (the highest in the world) will not have knock on effects in Party Political terms is living in a Dreamworld.

In fact we have already seen the emergence of Race based politics here at the last Local Elections - by Immigrant candidates pushing the interests of Immigrants.

It's only a matter of time...

Will do. Thanks for the tip.

So, FT and Capatala - would you support this guy in Austria? You can donate to the party as an EU citizen as far as I know. Would you be interested in doing so? He seems to be on about a lot of the same stuff as yourselves.
