    A linguistic manifesto

True. Though the lines on the map are predictable enough. It's Europe minus the Celts, Slavs and Club Med basically, with lines drawn further out to keep Johnny Turk et al, well at bay.

What's interesting is to contemplate why anyone would want to draw such a map. It's not as if the countries in the "core" have all that much in common with each other. But, ..

.. on the other hand, maybe there's a new fringe developing among the multi-lingual ghettoes of Brussels and Strasbourg. [Note how Strasbourg is at the dead centre of the map. Surely no accident]. There is a class of lowly EU functionaries and translators, which harks back to the good old days, when a cultured European was someone who spoke French, first and foremost, together with at least two other languages, probably German and Italian.

These people are horrified at how their beloved EU has developed, from a small community, where their linguisitic skills greased the wheels, to a much larger poly-glot situation, that depends on a multitude of specialised interpreters. Even worse, the central role of French has been displaced by English, a language whose cultural nexus is not even inside the community. What use now for a bi- or tri-linguist, when there are 25 different languages to deal with, and where English is the de-facto working language?

It should be obvious now that this "linguitariat" class sees no future for itself as the EU is presently developing. The solution is clear - the encouragement of a two-speed Europe and retrenchment by themselves into the core, where once again, they can resume their former influential roles, moderating the discourse between nations. They deal with the dominance of English by excluding the troublesome Irish (along with their own piffling language) and dividing the UK. While, they will initially pretend to embrace a small corner of England, in reality they know DeGaulle was correct all along, and the English cannot be trusted as true Europeans. When the retrenchment comes, all the English speakers will be excluded.

As for Iberia, Spanish (and therefore Portuguese) were always considered to be bastardised, uncultured forms of Italian, polluted by Arab influence. So, they are out. In order to make this not look too obvious, and because the Northern Italians don't like them, the southern half of Italy will also be excluded.

Finally, after everything else is settled, the French having retaken the European linguistic throne, will deal with two long standing domestic problems, ie. Corsica with its own connections to Southern Italy, and Celtic Brittany will be offloaded.

As alluded earlier, the new centre of the core EU will be Strasbourg, rather than Brussels (which as a quid pro quo to the retained minority languages, will be returned to the Dutch speaking, Flemish).

So, folks you read it here first. That's a real map, and this is the only possible explanation for it. It was probably published by mistake, because all of the propaganda themes (highlighted in yellow) shouldn't have been made public yet. But, it's on the way.

An interesting map showing where the heart of Europe is. No matter how many times people say "let's be at the heart of Europe", it is not going to make Ireland any closer to the heart of Europe. All the key decisions in Europe are made in this central core.
