    Cyprus and Ireland

    http://www.breakingnews.ie/2005/11/15/story230328.html

Anybody else consider the situation in Cyprus and Ireland to be very similar?

Small partitioned island with foreign military presence, minority veto over self-determination, former colony trying to assert its independence, member of the EU, I am surprised the comparison is not mentioned more often in debate here in Ireland

Yes but in Cyprus the larger segment rejected unification, whereas the smaller segment endorsed it.

They rejected the Annan plan which was not a fair dael. They (greek cypriots) are passionately in favour of unification

There is a difference between unification and assimilation.

Unification of the island, or that plus union with Greece?

Cyprus is a very interesting situation from the Irish perspective. It's not widely known that a few top Unionists, in particular John Taylor, own properties in the pariah northern Turkish Cypriot statelet and have been awarded decorations by Rauf Denktash over the years. The Unionists have always peddled the pro-Turkish minority agenda in the House of Commons and in the letters page of the Irish Times.

On the other hand, Seán Mac Stíofáin shared a cell with Nikos Sampson, a Greek Cypriot paramilitary leader in the 1950s and learned a smattering of Greek from him. Sampson and other EOKA leaders sent a wreath on Mac Stíofáin's death. The 1955 campaign by the EOKA made a huge impact on the IRA in the 1950s and certainly encouraged them to launch the Border Campaign. See this month's "50 years ago" section in the RSF rag Saoirse for evidence of the ideological impetus given to the IRA by the EOKA in the 1950s.

Yes very similar. The difference being that noone other than Turkey recognises Northern Cyprus as a separate state from Greek Cyprus. Hypocrisy...

No, unification with Greece (enosis) is not on the agenda for cypriot progressive-nationalist forces. I suppose the major difference is that in cyprus the desire for unification is not just rhetoric, nearly all parties are actively campaigning for it
