Are we at the heart of Europe , I wonder

How can a majority of our "esteemed leaders" argue that Irelands place is at the heart of Europe when we are'nt going to participate in the €200bn Recovery Plan, announced by the European Commission.

Anybody care to hazard a guess why we could'nt be arsed?

"at the heart of Europe" is just ballsology.

because Brian and Brian have a reflexive inability to spend money. They think tis 1985 again. Its not. But, give them time
Meanwhile, as in defence and immigtation we free ride on the economic coattails of the union we wouldnt defend or support. (cue the rabid eurohaters....)

We are more at the "little finger of the left hand" of Europe.

I would have said that the heart of Europe was ripped out a long time ago. Around the same time that decision making powers were given to a crowd of over-paid gombeens in Brussels.

Its very clear why the Irish government are not part of the EU wide stimulus plan, they would have to to contribute.

Contributing to the EU is not in the vocab of the government. We tend only to be good Europeans and part of the project when we get money for nothing...cough the cap.

Everyone's only in anything for what they can get out of it.

Hey troll, EU decisions are taken by heads of EU governments together with the directly-elected European Parliament. Of the 800 plus people responsible for taking EU decisions, no more than four of them are from Brussels. If you have a problem with your ones (or their levels of pay, which are decided by Dail Eireann) - then show them in the next election: European elections for the MEPs and national for the government. Either way, stop polluting these fora with senseless comments.

"At the heart of Europe" is just a slogan invoked when the govt wants us to vote yes. We are actually being dominated by Europe that fuelled cheap-credit with artificially low interest rates and on whose Council of Ministers and the ECJ the Big States dominate - indeed to the total exclusion of Ireland on the present bench of the latter.

Not much in the package proposals for Ireland. Very old-industry centred. Most of our industries are foreign owned - why give them money from our exchequer?
