Erin Go Klaus - WSJ leader on Klaus visit

Interesting leader from yesterday's Wall Street Journal that's worth a read.

How bizarre is EU politics? So much so that the Irish government feels compelled to chide another head of state for agreeing with a majority of the Irish people.

Whats even more weird (for me anyway) is that I find myself agreeing with someone of his political leanings against the view of so called centrist politicians?

The point made in the article about the Government siding with foreign leaders against its own people is one that should be repeated ad nauseam in any re-run campaign...

I wonder if Martin considered Sarkozys recent visit to be "inappropriate intervention".

    Their hypocrisy knows no bounds.

Klaus is not representative of either the Czech people or government.

Maybe he should consider running for President here on a Libertas platform when Mary McAleese is finished.

At least he would be better than Bertie.

Now that taking it too far even Bertie believes that global warming exists.

The Irish government would have been better off making a joke of him rather than making Klaus out to be someone we should pay any attention.

The Czechs don't take him serious why should we worry about him.

The WSJ is right. Sarko and Merkel seem to have donned the mantle of Cornwallis and Castlereagh pushing the Irish Parliament to pass the Act of Union in 1800. Anti-Lisbon TDs are our Henry Grattans, and Klaus is analogous to Von Steuben, the Prussian general who helped the Americans in the War of Independence. The govt need to put the wishes of the Irish people before the Brussels gravy train and patronage in Brussels.

Caught between the wishes of its own people and strong pressure from EU leaders to somehow ratify Lisbon anyway, Dublin is siding with Nicolas Sarkozy and Angela Merkel.

    Is the WSJ wrong?

think so. last time i checked dublin voted NO !

They probably shouldve said the dail instead. it is indeed bizarre to say the gov isnt representing the people of this country on the matter but rather their own interests with a cabal of foreigners

It sometimes takes a bit of distance to see the absurdity of things, and in this case the WSJ seems to see it pretty clearly. It would be really funny if I ddin't have this uneasy feeling that our "leaders" are conspiring with the Eurocrats to scare us into reversing our earlier vote.
