EU Commission initiates action against Ireland on public finances

Breaking news on Sky News. The EU Commission has commenced disciplinary measures against Ireland on the state of our public finances. The main disciplinary tool the Commission has are massive fines. No links yet.

Reminds me of the 2001 reprimand that played a key role in helping the no vote to Nice. Thank you Brussels from a no voter.

WHAT?

So the country is in financial trouble, and the EU punish us with fines?
How does that work!

Then you have the UK who are borrowing Billions to fund banks, the economy etc and they get away with it scot free!

Are the EU stupid? They need Ireland onside for Lisbon 2!

Time to pull out of the Euro and return to the punt to avoid these fines!

The EU Economic Affairs Commissioner Joaquim Almunia has confirmed that the Commission has commenced proceedings against Ireland because of the sharp deterioration in the public finances.

Europolitics at work.
Put some spine into Biffo and co to really sort out the 13billion deficit.
A warning to the other small countries to watch their house keeping.
And an end to Lisbon, or our continued participation in the Euro show.
Given the fact that a lot of other countries are going to be in a similar position very soon. Its a bit like the boy with his tumb in the dike.

Its only a chat, we ain't the world council.
In 2000 the Women's Institute in Britain gave Tony Blair the slow hand clap to demonstrate their contempt.
It was dignified, restrained and effective.Doesn't Bertie deserve the same scorn. No shouting, no abuse, no agression just a relentless slow clap whenever he speaks in public would be enough to end that man's presidential fantasy.

Not that simple.

The PR adeptship of the current and previous government ensured that
nasty issues like breach of directive fining never really made the Media.
Ireland has incurred huge fines on ecology and Habitat directive, which would
be a fact known to the current Environment Minister.

FF/PD were fined consistently for Breach of Habitat Directives from
the 13th September 2001, but the press and PR types thought not to
publish that in the good old times.
I presume they just threw wads of
money at the EU and that the info is available under FOI.

I do worry about how far we can be pushed by a sycophantic media if
we get a new Government given how far out on a limb the FF/PD/Greens
took the issues of utilising the EU for dosh but not adhering at all to
commonly accepted principles. These are usually perceived to be minority
issues and thus not attractive to the tub-thumpers of the current admin.
Most of this stuff has been published over the years by I.T in the back
pages (Business/Finance/Tech)- thus blithely ignored by the current
Green Props who vastly underestimate the nowse of voters.

it is the biggest budget airline in Britain in the same way as Sky is the biggest Satellite TV provider in Ireland or HP/Dell are the biggest PC sellers in Holland, the ownership of the company / where its headquartered has not relevance to its size in the respective market it serves...

or are you just looking for something to be offended about ?
